Tanzania Visa Requirements
Almost every visitor to Tanzania needs a tourist visa. Here is how to get one — on arrival, or online before you travel.
Getting your Tanzania visa
Please note: visa rules and fees change from time to time. Always confirm the current requirements with the official Tanzania Immigration portal or your nearest Tanzanian embassy before you travel.
1 The Tanzania visa
Visitors to Tanzania require a passport that is valid for at least six months after the initial date of travel. Almost all visitors require a tourist visa, which costs between US$20 and US$100 and is valid for three months.
While most embassy and travel websites will encourage you to get this visa before departing your home country (especially if you require a multiple-entry visa), it is straightforward to obtain a single-entry 90-day tourist (or work) visa on arrival at any of the country’s major entry points, such as Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro international airports — as long as you are able to pay for your visa in US dollars cash.
2 Visa on Arrival
You can get a Tanzanian visa on arrival. You will need to fill in a form and present your passport at the counter — your passport must have a validity of at least six months. Payment is in US dollars cash.

3 eVisa (apply online)
To get an online visa you fill in an online form, make payment and submit it. The application is reviewed and processed internally, and you can check the status (accepted or rejected) through the online system. You will be notified of your visa status by email.
We ask all travellers applying for an online visa to book through the official Tanzania Immigration website only, and not through any other links.

When you apply, you will first be asked for basic information — your email, passport number, passport issue country, and a security question and answer. After that you can start a new application; fill in every required field with correct information.
4 Which should you choose?

If you are travelling within the next two weeks, we recommend getting a Visa on Arrival, if you are permitted to do so.
5 Visa & Documents
It is possible to get your visa at the land border into Tanzania, or at Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam airport when you arrive — allow extra time for the process. You will need US$100 cash if you are a U.S. citizen, or US$50 cash for all other nationalities.
Alternatively, you can arrange your visa ahead of time. U.S. citizens can get the application from the U.S. Tanzania Embassy website, or call them in Washington D.C. on 202-939-6125 and ask for a visa application. Travellers of other nationalities should check the Tanzanian embassies around the world for the nearest one.
To apply by post, each traveller needs to send:
- A completed visa application
- A valid passport (at least 6 months before expiration)
- Two passport-size photos
- The fee — $50, or $100 for U.S. passports
- A prepaid return envelope addressed to yourself (multiple applications can be sent together)
- Proof of travel plans — our Reservation Confirmation is sufficient
Payment can be made by money order, credit card ($2 processing fee), or personal check (include a copy of your driver’s licence and add a $2 processing fee). Allow 30 days for processing. Consider sending your passport by certified mail or courier both ways to keep it safe.
